The Art of the Invisible – how not to get your work noticed!

Lucy Cooper, Managing Director at Union VFX talks about their work creating seamless invisible
effects.
As the sole VFX studio behind prestigious film projects such as: Three Billboards Outside
Ebbing, Missouri, Florence Foster Jenkins, and T2: Trainspotting. Union are renowned for the
quality, inventiveness and creativity of their work.
Much of their artistry lies in creating believable sets and environments that are central to the
story of the film.
Lucy will talk us through their work on the newly released Stan and Ollie, and share the
techniques the team employed to bring this critically acclaimed story to the screen.


After gaining a law degree from the University of Aberdeen and an MSc in Marketing  from the University of Strathclyde, Lucy began her career at Scottish Television before a move to London and the exciting world of post production. Her 20+ years of experience spans a variety of creative companies across broadcast, film and television post production and physical special effects.

In 2008, she joined the highly acclaimed VFX software developer Foundry, where she spent 8 years as a key member of the team that grew the company from 30 passionate people into a 330+ strong company.  During her time at Foundry, their software won two Sci-Tech Awards from the Academy of Motion Arts and Science and was used on every film awarded the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects since 2011.

Lucy joined Union in April 2016.  As Managing Director, she’s responsible for executing the company’s strategic vision, including business operations, people and new ventures, while ensuring that their strong people culture and creative identity continues to flourish.

Lucy is passionate about encouraging inclusion, diversity, awareness and opportunity within the VFX industry and is a Director of Animated Women UK and ACCESS:VFX. She also completed Cranfield School of Management’s “Women as Leaders” programme.
