Nik Phelps

Nik will be joining us on Industry Day (23/02/23) where he will be giving a talk on: Tunes and Toons alongside Nancy Denney-Phelps.

In their program Toons and Tunes, composer Nik Phelps and producer Nancy Denney-Phelps take you time travelling through the history of animation, focusing on the relationship between animation and music. On this voyage, they conduct a lively discussion on the stylistic visions of the directors and composers, telling many enlightening stories on interesting topics, filling you in on fascinating titbits about the films and about their production. Their company, Sprocket Productions, fosters the interest in animation and music. Nancy is a journalist and animation historian and Nik creates lively original music for animators and filmmakers of all types.

Born in Texas, Belgium-based composer Nik Phelps has played with diverse musical artists, from Eric Johnson and Lou Rawls, Frank Sinatra and They Might Be Giants, to Frank Zappa and Mary Martin, He recorded with Tom Waits, playing on three films and five CDs. He has been scoring film since 1988, starting with the seminal San Francisco soundtrack groupĀ The Club Foot Orchestra, and has been working in the animation field since 1995, scoring for the Film Roman animated series The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat.

In 1996 he founded the live film music project The Sprocket Ensemble, collaborating with animators such as Nina Paley, Bill Plympton, Lei Lei and Ivan Maximov. He also gives workshops dealing with pitching performance techniques and unleashing the creative process.
